Virginia City, Montana Territory, the site of a rich placer gold strike, was the first town incorporated in Montana (1864) and the territorial capital (1865-1874). Hezekiah L. Hosmer, a chief justice of Montana Territory (1864-1868). served as postmaster of Virginia City from 1868 until he left the territory for San Francisco in 1872.
